Full Suspension
Full suspension mountain bikes feature shocks on the front and rear wheels to help smooth out bumps. While obviously offering a great level of comfort, this category of bikes also affords greater efficiency for rough riding. Downhill racers use full suspension bikes with 6-10” of travel, while cross country riders and racers usually ride 3-6” travel bikes or hard tails. More travel almost always means a heavier bike.

Hard Tail
Hardtail mountain bikes offer front suspension only. This subcategory of mountain bikes is the majority of what you’ll find from entry level to $1000 in price. Hardtails are generally lightweight, simple, and good climbers. They are less suited to rocky, rough terrain than full suspension mountain bikes.

29er
29er mountain bikes have 29” diameter wheels instead of the conventional 26” size. Available in full suspension or hardtail formats, the concept behind the larger wheels is that they roll over obstacles more easily and offer better traction.

Single Speed
Single speed mountain biking began as an underground fad and has grown into a hugely popular subcategory of off-road riding. Enthusiasts love the simplicity and challenge which single speeding offers, and the added bonuses are lighter weight and lower cost.
