Lights and Safety
Headlights are available in a huge range of brightness and cost. Basic headlights are designed to make your presence known to traffic, while high end lights are intended to illuminate a dark road or trail. Taillights are simpler and less expensive, with nearly every option on the market utilizing LED technology and several blinking patterns.
Fenders
Fenders are available for just about any bike. Consider how often you’ll be riding in bad weather and whether you want to quickly install and remove your fenders, or just install and leave them on for good.
Locks
Locks are available for various levels of security. Of course, the highest security locks are also the heaviest weight, so you would ideally carry only what you need. Also, think about whether you’d prefer a key or combination lock.
Mirrors
Mirrors are available with various mounting options. The most popular are the handlebar mount mirrors, which are well suited to flat (mountain) and drop (road) style bars. Also, there are helmet and eyeglass mounted mirrors which are smaller and lighter, but more prone to accidental movement.
Racks, Baskets and Bags
If you are gearing up for a bicycle tour, you may need to equip your bike with racks and bags. Panniers, trunk bags, handlebar bags, and seat packs are all available to aid in your cargo carrying needs. Baskets are a great way to haul groceries and such around town, and they are available in various flavors as well.
Books, Maps and DVDs
Books, maps, and DVDs are available to motivate and inform on various aspects of cycling. Cycling videos can add a new dimension to your indoor workouts.
Hydration and Food
You won’t find many cycling and triathlon food options at your neighborhood grocery store. Various companies offer electrolyte/carbo/protein potions to keep you moving fast on the bike.
